Description
Backwoods Lodge is located at the intersection of the George Parks Highway and the Denali Highway. It is approximately 210 miles north of Anchorage, 150 miles south of Fairbanks and 26 miles south of the Denali National Park Visitor’s Center.
Lodging Facility:
The Backwoods Lodge consist of 12 rental units nestled in the quiet woodlands of Cantwell, Alaska.
There are six units set up as two queen room (approximately 14 x 26 feet) and three units that are single queen room (that are slightly smaller). The one extra unit is a full apartment type unit with separate bedroom and a full kitchen, full bath and a living room area. All units have private baths with showers only. Bath vanities are exterior to shower-toilet area. All units have 40 channel digital TV’s (Dish Network) and phones. The units are fully carpeted except the bath and vanity areas.
Each unit is heated with hot water baseboard heat individually thermostat controlled. All but two units have opposing windows for cross ventilation. The hot water heating boiler is oil fired. Domestic hot water is provided by a 70-gallon, oil-fired heater. A circulating loop is installed in the domestic hot water supply.
Fuel oil is stored in a 1000 gallon above ground tank contained in a small building. The septic system consist of a 2,500 gallon septic tank plus a drain field. All parts of the septic system are insulated with 6 inches of urethane foam. For wintertime use, all of the units have exterior winter plug-ins.
The entire building except the laundry area have a 4 foot high crawl space underneath. There is no plumbing in any exterior walls. All plumbing, wiring and communication systems can be accessed from this lighted and heated crawl space. All showers have concealed access panels to their valves and pipes. The laundry area has to 18 pound Wascomat commercial front loaders and two 30 pound propane dryers. There is a mop sink and laundry tub.
The adjacent storage contains employee bathroom plus shower and vanity. Phone communications consist of an AT&T Partner Plus system. The computer modules are located at the house, as is the controlling main phone. There are extensions in all the units, the laundry, the front office, the shop/warehouse and several rooms of the house.
House,Shop and Warehouse:
The house is 2000 square foot with a split entry. It contains three bedrooms, one full and two half baths, kitchen, dining and living areas. There is a small office and “winter” check in area on the ground floor. The master bath has a separate shower, large Jacuzzi tub and bidet. The kitchen, dining and living area has a vaulted ceiling and pergo pine plank flooring. Extensive use of red cedar tongue and groove paneling are on the walls and ceiling. Heat is provided by oil forced air. The hot water is 50 gallon oil fired. The utilities are contained in a fire-isolated room. The satellite system (which is a 12 foot dish) is c-band and installed in all the rooms and shop. The house is very insulated. It has 12” fiberglass in the ceilings and 6” fiberglass plus 2” urethane in the walls. The house is cedar log sided with a covered deck above the utility room. An above ground 1000 gallon fuel oil tank is shared with the shop building. There are two 500 gallon gasoline storage tanks. The shop and warehouse building is 36 by 44 feet plus an 8 foot wide unheated lean to across the back. It is composed of 4 rooms plus the lean-to and utility room. The equipment bay is 16 foot wide by 36 feet long with a 10 x 10 foot door and concrete floor. The center part of the building, which is 2 rooms, is 12 foot wide and wooden floored. The balance of the building has concrete flooring.
The Backwoods Lodge is a 12-unit motel type operation on the edge of The Denali National Park. It currently has a single diamond rating from AAA. The property consists of the 12 unit lodge building, a two thousand square foot house, a sixteen hundred square foot warehouse and shop building. There are two additional separate units, which unit 11 has new carpet and vinyl linoleum .
The buildings sit on 11.67 Acres (more or less) of land, composed of three separate lots. Backwoods Lodge is currently operated on a year around basis.
